The Cove opened it's doors as the Methow Valley Food
bank on April 23rd, 1998 with the expressed purpose of demonstrating God's love in our community. This goal was to be
accomplished through short term assistance by distribution of supplemental food and long term assistance by the developing
of relationship and a resource network. In 2000 the Cove was given its non-profit and 501(C) (3) tax status.
In February of 2001, the Cove Board agreed to expand its area of ministry to include financial assistance to those in
need. The Cove Aid and Assistance Fund was established with its own group of committed volunteers and policy guidelines. The
Aid and Assistance Fund assists people in financial crises. The need is ascertained by an application interview with one of the
Cove board members. Each client may recieve up to $150.00 year with some rare exceptions.
In 2002 another avenue of care was started for the elderly of the Methow Valley. This branch of care is called the "Guardian
Angels" program. It organized care-givers for the elderly. A volunteer is assigned to look in on an elderly person each week to
help with housekeeping, shopping, recreation and social interaction.
The Cove serves approximately 65 families each week. It has become very successful in its approach to meeting
these social needs in the Methow Valley. It has become a model that other communities have considered.
The Cove is supported by grants, donations and fund raising events. The work of the Cove is an ever expanding work. The new project is an adult family home for 6 elders called Jamie's Place in Winthrop, WA.
